Cosart is a medication primarily used to treat hypertension, or high blood pressure. It contains Losartan potassium, which is part of a class of drugs known as angiotensin-II receptor antagonists. This medication helps prevent the narrowing of blood vessels, thereby improving blood flow and reducing blood pressure. Additionally, it is utilized to decrease the risk of stroke in certain individuals with heart disease. Losartan potassium also serves to protect the kidneys from damage related to diabetes.
Usage of Cosart should strictly follow your doctor's instructions or the guidelines provided on the medication label. Do not change the dosage without your doctor's consent, and refrain from using Cosart after the treatment period has ended.
All medications come with a patient information leaflet. Cosart can be taken with or without meals. Always keep Cosart in a cool and dry environment. It may take up to 4 weeks of consistent use (as prescribed) for Losartan potassium to effectively control your blood pressure. You may need to take this medication for an extended period, even if you feel well, as high blood pressure often does not show visible symptoms.
While on Losartan, be alert for symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or excessive sweating, as these can lead to severe dehydration and lower your blood pressure even further. Low blood pressure can become a critical and life-threatening issue. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of these symptoms while taking Cosart.
Common side effects of Cosart may include dizziness, lightheadedness, swelling in the ankles or feet, and flushing. If any of these symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical attention promptly. Serious side effects are rare; however, if you experience serious symptoms like a rapid or irregular heartbeat, fainting, or any other severe reactions, seek medical assistance immediately.
The side effects listed above are not exhaustive, and you may encounter other reactions due to Losartan. If you experience any significant side effects from this medication, contact your doctor without delay.
